The Best Artsy Coastal Getaway, Laguna Beach, California: Everything You Need to Know

Laguna Beach is easily one of the best destinations for a coastal getaway in Southern California.

Even though this might be one of the most popular local getaways in Southern California, I can’t resist a weekend trip to this magical town. The coastal charm, art festivals and galleries, and incredible beaches are truly something you can’t find anywhere else.

The Best Artsy Coastal Getaway – Laguna Beach, California

Southern California boasts of pristine beaches, amusement parks, restaurants, historic landmarks, and some of the cutest coastal towns in the United States. Although Laguna may be a local favorite, it’s typically missed or skipped on coastal road trips and California vacations.

The History of Laguna Beach, California

For hundreds of years the land that Laguna stands on what was the home of the native Tongva people. In the 1500’s Spanish missionaries encountered the region and began to settle, while establishing the nearby Mission San Juan De Capistrano.

Laguna Canyon first appeared on an 1841 Mexican land grant map as part of Rancho San Joaquin, labeled the “Glen of the Lagoons.” Hence the name Laguna.

The town’s modern era began in 1903 when Painter Norman St. Clair arrived and sparked Laguna’s transformation into an art colony. Within a few years, dozens of fellow artists followed him and made Laguna Beach their home. At one point, over half of Laguna Beach’s residents were artists.

During the great depression, the people debuted the ‘living pictures’ which would later become one of Laguna Beach’s most iconic Festivals; the Pageant of the Masters.

In the 60s, a group of rejected artists created their own festivals, which was originally coined ‘the rejects festival’ but has now transformed into the modern-day Sawdust festival.

Getting to Laguna Beach is relatively easy; it’s located right along the Pacific Coast Highway, which runs the entire span of the state. Unfortunately, the nearest train station is San Juan Capistrano, a few miles inland.

Inside the Laguna city limits, you can catch a ride on the free Trolley to get around town.

What to do in The Best Artsy Coastal Getaway – Laguna Beach, California

My personal favorite is exploring the Sawdust art festival during the summertime, where dozens of local artists come together to display their work under a grove of eucalyptus trees.

Shop at one of the 100+ independently owned surf shops and boutiques in Downtown Laguna. The city itself is extremely walk-able, with restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and art galleries lining the roads.

Peppertree lane is one of my favorite alcoves to explore, make sure to Get Ice cream at Gelato Paradisio.

If you’re looking for a great spot for a beach day, then Woods Cove, Thousand Steps Beach, and the Pirates Tower on Victoria beach are all incredible options. But remember to check the surf report, as Laguna has a history of harsh rip-currents.

Laguna beach Boasts of incredible cliffs, inlets, and crystal-clear waters. These are truly some of the most stunning coastlines in Southern California.

The Free Art Galleries:

Downtown Laguna Beach is packed with free art displays and galleries of all kinds. From Sculptures to paintings to mixed media displays, there are dozens of options to explore, all for free

What I didn’t love about Laguna Beach:

The Parking:

Parking has always been an issue here. Residential mansions line the coasts and the beaches, making street parking and beach parking extremely difficult. Downtown lots are $20-$50 for the day, and if you are lucky enough to snag street parking, then the maximum is typically only 2-3 hours.

The Traffic:

The PCH typically becomes very backed up through Laguna Beach. The amount of pedestrians and activity from downtown slows the entire highway down, which can make getting in and out take quite a while

If you are driving through the area, then you absolutely have to visit Mission San Juan Capistrano. It’s easily one of the most stunning historical structures in Southern California, with deep history in a quaint town older than the US itself.

Another cute coastal town is Newport beach, Balboa island is famous for its frozen chocolate banana and ocean boardwalks

Disneyland & California Adventure

Just 45 minutes away from Laguna Beach is one of the most iconic theme parks in the world. The original Disneyland and it’s sister park, California Adventure.
